Dunn Lumber is seeking an experienced Buyer to manage the day-to-day performance of an assigned group of product categories. This role connects category strategy with daily execution by translating forecasts and service goals into item-level inventory plans, accurate min/max settings, effective replenishment, and reliable vendor performance. You will own inventory health for your categories, review suggested orders before they become purchase orders, manage vendor relationships, and direct the Junior Buyers supporting your work. This is a strong opportunity for a Buyer or inventory planner who is ready to take broader ownership and continue developing toward category management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Dunn Lumber takes pride in going the extra mile to help our customers and coworkers, which means assisting different departments and team members outside of regular assigned duties through cross training. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions: Category and Inventory Management Own inventory health for assigned categories, including min/max, safety stock, turns, in-stock performance, overstock, understock, and dead stock. Apply category forecasts to item-level planning using prior-year trends, seasonality, lead times, promotions, known projects, and changes in demand. Translate category service-level targets into practical replenishment settings and ordering guidance. Set order cadence and direct the replenishment work completed by Junior Buyers. Identify inventory exceptions and drive corrective actions that produce lasting results. Planning and Buying Run the monthly planning refresh and verify system-recommended min/max and safety-stock values before they drive ordering. Review suggested orders and economic order quantity recommendations to confirm that quantities, timing, and store capacity make sense. Build and sequence truckload, early-buy, promotional, and volume-buy shipments in partnership with the Category Manager. Adjust plans as demand, inventory, vendor availability, or program conditions change. Vendor, Pricing, and Product Management Manage routine vendor relationships involving order cadence, lead times, fill rates, confirmations, and service issues. Resolve pricing discrepancies, shipment errors, and order issues escalated by Junior Buyers. Execute established vendor programs, promotions, and rebate terms, and identify opportunities for improvement. Maintain accurate product cost and pricing data, and flag margin or price-variance concerns. Support new-product and line-extension evaluations, and manage approved discontinuations and close-outs. Team and Cross-Functional Execution Direct and support the Junior Buyers handling transactional work for your categories, reviewing accuracy and coaching on process. Partner with store operations and inventory teams on transfers, counts, space constraints, and inventory accuracy. Contribute to purchasing performance measures such as inventory turns, in-stock rates, stockout duration, and purchase-order efficiency. Communicate category risks, exceptions, and recommended actions clearly to the Category Manager and purchasing leadership. Other duties as assigned Previous Experience Minimum of 3 years of experience in procurement, with a focus on inventory management, preferably within the retail hardware or building materials industry.
