Bookkeeper – Transportation & Logistics
TMSI LTDTMSI Ltd. is a well-established transportation company in Atlantic Canada, operating across both road and marine sectors. With a fleet of trucks and marine services, we move commercial freight throughout the region, including regular service between Halifax and Argentia, Newfoundland. We have an immediate full-time opening in Dartmouth for an experienced bookkeeper with a background in transportation or logistics. This hands-on role manages the day-to-day accounting records from data entry through reconciliations and month-end support. The bookkeeper works with operations to ensure freight billing and costs are recorded accurately. Duties and Responsibilities · Manage full-cycle bookkeeping, including data entry, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the general ledger. · Prepare customer freight invoices, verify rates and supporting documents, and follow up on outstanding balances. · Receive, verify, and code vendor invoices for carriers, fuel, ports and terminals, maintenance, and equipment. · Track costs by shipment, voyage, or equipment to support accurate reporting and profitability analysis. · Reconcile bank, credit card, fuel card, and general ledger accounts each month; investigate and resolve discrepancies. · Prepare journal entries and maintain clear supporting documentation. · Prepare and file HST returns and assist with other government remittances. · Support payroll processing and related accounting entries as needed. · Assist with month-end and year-end close, including accruals, reports, and records for the external accountant or auditors. · Work with dispatch and operations to ensure completed work is billed accurately and on time. · Maintain organized financial records and help improve accounting procedures and controls. Qualifications · A diploma or degree in accounting, or a bookkeeping certificate from an accredited institution. · At least three years of bookkeeping experience; transportation, trucking, marine, freight, or logistics experience is strongly preferred. · Familiarity with freight billing, fuel surcharges, and industry-specific cost tracking. · Experience using transportation management software with integrated accounting functions, along with Microsoft Office, especially Excel. · Ability to work independently, prioritize deadlines, and manage the bookkeeping function with minimal supervision. · Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and accuracy in a busy environment. · Clear communication skills and a team-oriented approach. · Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
