WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: This position is part of the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers, and the incumbent of this position will serve as a deckhand onboard the P/V Stimson, a 156-foot patrol vessel in Kodiak. The Boat Officer I assists in operation and maintenance of the vessel including skiff and outboards. This position performs a full range of duties including: working as a deck hand, procurement, meal planning and preparation, operation of the deck crane, and assisting with maintenance of vessel machinery. THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT: This position is in the Alaska Wildlife Trooper/ State Trooper building in Kodiak, which features ample and easily accessible parking. Boat Officers work on the vessel to conduct routine maintenance at the dock and in town while not underway. When the vessel is underway crew conducts commercial fishing patrol and gear inspection, along with responding to emergency calls for service. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: Knowledge of deck procedures, line handling, operation of deck and ground tackle equipment, skiff handling, operation of marine radio and auto pilot and commercial fishing techniques and practices. Working knowledge of routine maintenance of vessel/equipment and use of mechanical and carpentry tools. Working knowledge of basic food planning, preparation, and cooking. Ability to perform heavy labor and lifting and to operate equipment and use tools safely. Skill in the use of various portable and fixed machine and hand tools and carry out oral and written instructions. More information about the Department of P ublic Safety can be found on our website: http://dps.alaska.gov/ Minimum Qualifications Six months of work experience as a crewmember on a marine vessel, handling gear and other equipment, performing wheel watch, handling lines, performing basic maintenance, or preparing food. Special Note: Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariners Document. Must have the physical capacity for arduous work and extended time at sea. Successful candidates must obtain an Ordinary Seaman Merchant Mariners Document before completing the probationary period. Desirable Qualification: A U.S. Coast Guard Operator or Engineer license is highly desirable. An Able Seaman (AB) Merchant Mariner Document (any grade) is desirable. TERMINOLOGY AND LICENSES: DOCUMENTABLE DAYS: Days at sea for which proof of service can be produced. As per U.S. Coast Guard definition, a day is defined as 8 hours of work.
