Boat Captain – Tugboat / Marine Construction Marlin Construction Services Location: Sea Isle City, NJ Job Type: Project-Based / Construction Compensation: NJ Prevailing Wage Job Summary Marlin Construction Services is seeking an experienced Boat Captain to operate a truckable tugboat in support of marine construction operations in Sea Isle City, NJ . The Boat Captain will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the tugboat while assisting with the movement and positioning of barges, equipment, materials, and other marine assets at the project site. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience operating tugboats, workboats, or similar commercial vessels and is comfortable working in an active marine construction environment. This is a hands-on position requiring strong vessel-handling skills, good judgment, and the ability to coordinate closely with construction crews working from barges, docks, and shore. Responsibilities Safely operate a truckable tugboat/workboat in support of marine construction activities Maneuver, push, pull, and position barges and other floating equipment Transport personnel, equipment, and materials as required Assist with barge positioning, docking, mooring, and towing operations Navigate safely in shallow water, tidal conditions, and confined marine construction areas Monitor weather, tides, currents, vessel traffic, and jobsite conditions Perform routine pre-trip and operational inspections of the vessel Monitor engines, fuel systems, navigation equipment, lines, and other onboard equipment Identify and report mechanical or safety issues Maintain a clean, safe, and organized vessel Communicate effectively with project managers, operators, dockbuilders, laborers, and other members of the marine construction crew Follow all company safety procedures and applicable maritime regulations Assist with general marine construction activities when vessel operations permit Qualifications Previous experience operating a tugboat, push boat, workboat, or similar commercial vessel Experience maneuvering and positioning barges strongly preferred Marine construction experience preferred Strong understanding of safe boating, docking, towing, and line-handling procedures Ability to safely operate in shallow, tidal, and restricted waterways Knowledge of basic vessel maintenance and troubleshooting Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and marine conditions Ability to communicate clearly with shore-based and marine crews Reliable transportation to the Sea Isle City project location Must be dependable, safety-conscious, and comfortable working as part of a construction crew Must possess any USCG license/credential required for the vessel and operations being performed Must be able to meet applicable drug-testing and safety requirements Preferred Experience Commercial tugboat or push-boat operation Marine construction Barge handling and positioning Dock, bulkhead, pile-driving, or waterfront construction Operation of small commercial workboats Familiarity with South Jersey coastal and inland waterways Work Environment This position is based on an active marine construction site in Sea Isle City, New Jersey . Work will primarily take place outdoors and on or around vessels, barges, docks, and construction equipment. Candidates must be comfortable working around water and in changing weather and tidal conditions.
