Position Summary The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing all aspects of produce department operations, including merchandising, inventory management, product quality, food safety, customer service, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department maintains fresh, high-quality products, achieves sales and profit goals, and delivers an exceptional shopping experience for customers. Key Responsibilities Department Operations Assist in managing daily produce department operations. Ensure produce displays are fully stocked, fresh, attractive, and merchandised according to company standards. Monitor product quality, freshness, rotation, and presentation throughout the day. Support production and replenishment plans to meet customer demand while minimizing shrink. Maintain clean, organized, and safe sales floor, prep, and storage areas. Team Leadership Assist with training, coaching, and developing produce associates. Provide daily direction and support to team members. Promote a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and customer service. Serve as acting department leader when the Produce Manager is absent. Assist with performance management and associate development efforts. Customer Service Deliver exceptional customer service and create a welcoming shopping experience. Assist customers with product selection, seasonal offerings, and produce-related questions. Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally. Promote department programs, featured items, and seasonal promotions. Food Safety and Compliance Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards. Monitor proper handling, storage, rotation, and display of all produce items. Verify associates follow established safety and operational procedures. Maintain readiness for company audits and regulatory inspections. Inventory and Financial Management Assist with ordering, receiving, and inventory control. Monitor sales, shrink, gross profit, and labor performance. Support labor scheduling efforts based on business needs. Help achieve department sales, shrink, and profitability goals. Assist in controlling waste through effective inventory management and product rotation. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous produce, retail grocery, food service, or supervisory experience preferred. Strong customer service and leadership skills. Knowledge of produce handling, merchandising, and inventory management preferred. Basic math, communication, and computer skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment.
