The position provides daily operational leadership for routes, driver coverage, dispatch, student needs, extracurricular trips, and family communication. It also supports employee supervision, safety practices, fleet coordination, recordkeeping, and continuous improvement. The Assistant Director acts on behalf of the Director when designated. Essential functions and responsibilities Daily Operations and Routing Monitor daily bus operations and coordinate responses to driver absences, open routes, vehicle shortages, traffic, weather, delays, and other service disruptions. Help develop, review, and adjust routes, stops, schedules, and vehicle assignments using enrollment, ridership, capacity, travel times, and student safety information. Coordinate drivers and substitute assignments and communicate changes promptly to drivers, schools, families, and other affected staff. Oversee the preparation of route maps and instructions for regular routes, field trips, athletics, and other extracurricular transportation. Help coordinate trip requests, scheduling, staffing, and vehicles. Work with the maintenance team to assign appropriate vehicles, report defects, arrange replacement buses, and minimize interruptions to service. Monitor transportation data and prepare reports that help the Director evaluate route performance, staffing needs, service reliability, and opportunities for improvement. Clip and review bus video. Student Safety and Emergency Response Assist the Director in responding to crashes, vehicle breakdowns, severe weather, student incidents, and other emergencies. Help account for students, arrange safe transportation, notify appropriate parties, and document the response. Communicate essential student health, accessibility, behavioral, and emergency information to authorized transportation personnel on a need-to-know basis. Coordinate with schools and appropriate student services staff to implement transportation arrangements required by individual student plans. Review safety concerns involving routes, stops, loading areas, and transportation practices; investigate concerns within assigned authority and recommend corrective action. Support driver safety training, emergency preparedness, and incident follow-up Staff Leadership and Administration Assist with recruiting, onboarding, training, scheduling, coaching, and evaluating transportation employees as assigned. Review employee hours, attendance, and leave records and submit accurate information through district processes. Provide clear direction to drivers, dispatch staff, mechanics, and office personnel while supporting a respectful, accountable team culture. Follow district procedures and applicable employment agreements when addressing staffing or performance matters, elevate matters requiring Director or Human Resources action. Communication and Customer Service Respond professionally and promptly to questions and concerns from parents, guardians, students, school staff, and the public. Research issues, document follow-up, and refer decisions beyond assigned authority to the Director. Advise schools of route or bus changes, delays, and emergencies.
