Active Transportation Program Coordinator
AmeriCorpsLocal Motion's Active Transportation Program (ATP) will provide participants with new opportunities to improve individual health outcomes while building community connections that strengthen social health. On one end of the age-range spectrum, Local Motion will deploy a "Walking School Bus" program at Title 1 elementary schools, while at the other, Local Motion will expand its "Giving Rides" program offering assisted recreational bike rides to seniors and adults with disabilities to serve low income members of these populations. Expanding the scope of the Walking School Bus program (WSB) to specifically include Title 1 schools in the CPS system. The VISTA will develop new relationships with CPS administrators, caregivers, and parents at those schools, with the goal of launching the first volunteer-led WSB cohort at one school in the spring of 2027 followed by two additional WSB cohorts at new schools in the fall of 2027. The VISTA would build on initial interest already shown by administrators, parents, and caregivers in hosting a WSB by developing trainings, educational materials, and promotional events to support schools in launching their own WSB. Establishing a Giving Rides (GR) program that specifically serves low-income seniors and adults with disabilities. The VISTA would develop burgeoning relationships with social service providers who have already demonstrated interest in a GR program and recruit and train a network of volunteers who would be capable of providing assisted rides, with the goal of launching the first volunteer enabled rides in the second quarter of 2027. The VISTA would collaborate with social service providers in developing the parameters of the GR program offerings, including by developing promotional materials for the social service providers to use in recruiting eligible GR participants, and connect with prospective participants through group and individual meetings. Member Duties : The VISTA project seeks to alleviate poverty through increasing access to active transportation opportunities for daily transportation and recreation. The project includes two Active Transportation Programs: Walking School Buses (WSBs) and Giving Rides (GR). WSBs increase attendance, access to healthy meals, and physical activity for participants, and also improve behavioral and academic outcomes. The GR program provides recreational rides on an electric-assisted, adaptive wheelchair bicycle to people who cannot ride on their own, thus increasing access to outdoor recreation and social connections for participants. The project expects to benefit approximately 120 individuals. The VISTA member will build capacity and coordinate program delivery by recruiting and training volunteers, engaging high-needs schools and assisted living facilities, and promoting WSB and GR opportunities to target populations.
