Role Description The 911 Dispatcher role at Sangamon County 911 is a full-time, on-site position located in Springfield, IL. The dispatcher receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency calls, gathers essential information from callers, and determines the appropriate response based on established procedures. This role involves dispatching law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services, while maintaining clear and timely radio and telephone communication with field units. The dispatcher monitors multiple communication and computer systems, updates incident information, and ensures accurate documentation of all calls and responses. Day-to-day work includes remaining calm under pressure, providing pre-arrival instructions when applicable, and delivering professional customer service to callers in distress or seeking assistance. Qualifications Candidates should possess skills in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Emergency Services to effectively support medical, fire, and law enforcement responses. Candidates should possess strong Dispatching skills, including multitasking with phones, radios, and computer systems in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should possess excellent Communication and Customer Service skills to interact clearly, respectfully, and efficiently with callers and responders. Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions under pressure, and follow established protocols and procedures consistently. Proficiency with computer systems, data entry, and basic office software; ability to learn dispatch software and mapping tools. High school diploma or equivalent required; prior experience in public safety, dispatch, or related fields is beneficial. Willingness to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; reliable attendance and punctuality are essential. Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, and any required certifications or training programs.
