Duties Safely operate school buses, including specialized vehicles such as wheelchair-accessible buses, following all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Transport students to designated school locations, extracurricular activities, and field trips with punctuality and professionalism. Assist students with boarding and disembarking, providing support for those with mobility challenges or special needs, including wheelchair assistance. Maintain a safe driving environment by practicing defensive driving techniques, quick response to traffic changes, and emergency stop procedures when necessary. Ensure passenger safety by enforcing behavior management policies and maintaining order during transit. Conduct routine vehicle inspections before and after routes, reporting any mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly. Provide excellent customer service by communicating clearly with students, parents, school staff, and emergency responders when needed. Skills Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit bus operation with a strong understanding of vehicle codes and transportation safety regulations. Knowledge of traffic laws, state and local commercial driving laws, and emergency response procedures specific to transportation. Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for vehicle maintenance or assisting students with mobility devices. Excellent communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for engaging diverse student populations. Experience working with children or seniors, demonstrating patience, discipline, and behavior management skills. Certified in first aid and CPR; knowledge of emergency response procedures for transportation is highly valued. Strong understanding of student discipline policies and school policy knowledge to ensure safe and respectful transit environments. Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes while maintaining focus on passenger safety. Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus operation; familiarity with vehicle codes is essential.
