Description

Positions assigned in this class, under close supervision, assist with routine semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, repair, replacement and upkeep of water meters, valves and hydrants. This position provides opportunity to learn about the water industry.

Essential Duties

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essentials duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City's needs.

  • Assist maintenance workers with routine or emergency water line repairs and maintenance. 
  • Install, replace and repair water meters, valves and hydrants.  
  • Operate a variety of equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Perform a variety of equipment operation and manual labor tasks as assigned; duties will vary according to job assignment.
  • Unload, store, and use various chemicals.
  • Assist with semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance and manual labor work.=
  • Complete required logs and reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
  • Support the city’s policies, goals, and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Must be actively enrolled in high school or college and be at least 16 years of age at the time of employment.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge

  • General knowledge or familiarity with city and department procedures, policies, guidelines and city code.

Skills
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and follow safety standards and practices.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a variety of tools and/or machinery.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Majority of work to be performed outdoors in varied temperatures. Work includes walking and operation of a
vehicle and construction related equipment. Requires moderate exertion and lifting carrying objects between
20 and 50 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily. Performs construction
and maintenance functions requiring visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and
continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement. May be exposed to high voltage.
