Position Description

DEFINITION:

Assist in providing maintenance and care of animals in CFCC VMT Program population; perform various facility operational and clerical duties related to the Veterinary Medical Technology program.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Program Director, Veterinarian Medical Technology
May occasionally receive general supervision from full-time instructional staff
Exercises no right supervision


Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Essential Functions:

  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines, including the CFCC Veterinary Medical Technology Animal Care guidelines.
  • Maintain records on animal care, student attendance, performance, and produce summary reports.
  • Ensure safety of animals.
  • Perform animal care duties as needed.
  • Order animal supplies and materials as necessary and produce receipt reports.
  • Maintain animal records according to IACUC and accreditation requirements
  • Attend meetings as required; assuring compliance with IACUC.
  • Ensure compliance with rules and regulations of the VMT program and IACUC.
  • Direct the care and maintenance of animals in the facility.
  • Capture and restrain animals as necessary for treatment and transport.
  • Assist faculty with capture, restraint, handling and medication of animals.
  • Follow faculty instructions and provide basic first aid to animals when needed.
  • Operate veterinary equipment including sanitation equipment, appliances, restraint devices, and delivery of medications by various routes.
  • Operate office equipment including computers, printers and copiers.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist instructors with preparing supplies and transport of supplies as needed for VMT course Labs.
  • Coordinate with faculty the use and maintenance of equipment and facilities assigned to the program.
  • Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous materials, and hazardous waste.
Other Important Functions:
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:


Knowledge of:
  • Animal care, handling, and husbandry
  • Small animal behavior, mainly rodents, rabbits, cats and dogs
Ability To:
  • Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate concisely and respectfully, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    • Lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Minimum Education/Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
Minimum Experience:
  • One year professional experience working in an animal care setting (kennels, veterinary office, humane society, etc.).
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Completion of two years of college coursework in biology or related field or equivalent is preferred
  • Valid First Aid certification preferred
