Job Summary:
To safely drive district vans, other than school buses, to transport students to and from school in a safe and timely manner.
MPS Physical Performance test, department's physical exam for drivers and pre-employment, annual and random drug testing and MPS transportation written and driving tests.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive school van safely to transport students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions in a timely manner
- Assist students and other passengers to provide for safe loading and unloading from the van during normal and emergency transport
- Assess potential emergency situations and take appropriate action to protect the safety and well-being of passengers
- Instruct students in the rules and regulations of safe bus riding and evacuation procedures
- Manage and handle conduct of students and passengers while they are in the van
- Prepare documentation for disciplinary problems to be administered by school administrators
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of each van driven each day to include trash clean-up, window and vehicle washing
- Report any discrepancies to vehicle maintenance following proper procedures
- Do not drive an unsafe vehicle; maintain cleanliness and sanitation of van
- Complete required paperwork and keep route sheet current
- Regular and on-time attendance required
- Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications:
- Valid, or ability to obtain, AZ (Class D) driver’s license
- Ability to obtain an IVP fingerprint clearance card
- Knowledge of Arizona traffic laws
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must have clean, accident-free driving record for the past three years

- Successfully pass driver MPS Physical Performance Test and ability to acquire 1st Aid/CPR certification
- Successfully pass department’s physical exam for drivers (bi-annually) and pre-employment, annual and random drug testing
- Successfully pass MPS transportation written and driving tests
- Proficient demonstration of driving skills; ability to drive under pressure and to use 2-way radio communication
- Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) with students, parents, co-workers, and district personnel at all levels
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to all information due to the sensitive nature of Families in Transition
- Ability to meet time schedules, punctuality, and reliability a must
- Ability to work varying driving assignments
- Physical ability to pull, reach, push, bend and walk
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- The van driver operates in a mobile environment, spending most of their workday driving a van
- The driver also spends time outside during student drop-off and pick-up, often in varying weather conditions
- Daily interaction with students, school staff, and sometimes parents
- May face traffic congestion, inclement weather, and other road hazards
- Must be able to sit for extended periods (up to several hours per shift)
- Occasionally lift or move objects or equipment up to 25-50 pounds, especially for special needs transportation (e.g., wheelchairs, medical devices)
