The Transportation Worker 3 Traffic Control will report to the District 7 Sign Shop for the following counties: Barbour, Upshur, Lewis, Gilmer, Braxton, and Webster. This position, under general supervision, performs manual and skilled work maintaining and repairing roadway signs. Key responsibilities include receiving and executing work orders for daily tasks, equipment, and materials. The worker is responsible for installing and repairing signs on breakaway supports in accordance with state standards and specifications, as well as fabricating signs and supports following established fabrication details. This position also requires operating and performing preventive maintenance on state equipment. The employee must follow all procedures for traffic control and worksite safety, assist with monitoring material inventories, report material usage and needs to the supervisor, and report on the status of work performed to the crew supervisor. Performs other related duties as required.
• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Option #1: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the fabrication of aluminum or other metal parts, equipment, signs, or other fabricated materials.
OR
Option #2: Four (4) years of full- time or equivalent part-time paid experience in electrical or electronics repair, fabrication of aluminum or other metal parts, equipment, signs, or other fabricated materials.
Traffic Control Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
