Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief will report to various counties within District 8. Under limited supervision, this employee will supervise a crew of transportation workers who maintain and repair roadway signs. Key responsibilities of this role include - Review work orders to determine the daily work schedule, required equipment, and materials; supervise and install signs on breakaway supports in accordance with standards and specifications; fabricate signs and supports in accordance with fabrication details; maintain state equipment; train lower-level employees in the fabrication and installation of signs and supports, equipment operation and preventative maintenance, traffic control, and safety. The incumbent will monitor material inventories and communicate material usage and needs; monitor and evaluate the work performed and provide feedback to the crew and manager. Performs other related duties as required. District 8 consists of Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, and Tucker counties.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). However, a Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief is excluded, and the applicant will not be placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. 
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Transportation Worker 3 Crew Chief, the applicant is excluded from being placed within a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program.
  • In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Pay Grade 12H
    Tier 4 hourly rate: $25.8713

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads a crew of transportation workers and participates in the maintenance and repair of highways.
  • May lead a crew of sign shop employees in the fabrication, location, installation, and repair of highway signage.
  • Investigate citizen complaints on roads and inspect highways to determine needed repair work.
  • Assists in scheduling maintenance and repair projects.
  • Coordinates equipment and materials needed.
  • Assigns duties to crew members and leads crews in the completion of projects.
  • Completes all required reports concerning time and attendance, materials, equipment, and inspection of work.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • In the area of assignment of Crew Chief, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.


Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
• Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
• Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
• Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
• Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
• Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.
• Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.


Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATIONNo formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCEFour (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway construction or roadway maintenance, or in bridge or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
