The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator will report to the Mercer County Headquarters. Performs apprentice-level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Position will be assigned in one of the following functional areas: Equipment Operator or Laborer. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment to repair and replace concrete and bituminous road surfaces, cleans culverts, and repairs shoulders. Performs rough carpentry and builds forms. Operates various maintenance equipment. Performs minor maintenance on engines and automotive bodies for highway maintenance equipment. May also mow or clear bush from along roads or DOH facilities using a hand scythe or hand mower. May plow snow using a light truck. Performs related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicants will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

• Knowledge of general safety procedures.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
