To perform routine operation of motorized vehicles, driving established routes to transport clients to various locations.
An employee in this classification drives and operates a passenger van and/or bus to transport clients to various locations on established routes, and performs related duties as assigned. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated on the basis of attaining performance objectives, safe operation of vehicles and completion of assigned route.
· Transports senior citizens and the general public to and from various locations on established routes.
· Assists clients on and off vehicles; secures wheelchairs; ensures passengers follow safety regulations while in transit.
· Drives vehicle to transport clients on special trips organized by the department.
· Collects and submits daily fares.
· Cleans vehicles; notifies supervisor of any vehicle maintenance or repairs necessary.
· Receives and responds to client / public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints regarding areas of responsibility.
· Maintains accurate and complete fuel and mileage records.
· Operates a vehicle, passenger vehicle, wheelchair lift, two-way radio.
· Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, clients, and the general public.
· May provide clerical support to staff as assigned, performing such duties as accepting transportation reservations, scheduling daily routes, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.
· Performs general facility maintenance duties as necessary.
· Performs related duties as required.
· Thorough knowledge in the methods, policies and procedures of the BARTS pertaining to specific duties of the Transportation Specialist I.
· Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
· Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
· Knowledge of the methods and regulations pertaining to public transportation; is able to drive and operate a passenger vehicle with safety, following all traffic laws.
· Ability to provide information and assistance to passengers as needed.
· Knowledge of proper English usage; has knowledge of basic mathematics.
· Ability to prepare required records with accuracy.
· Ability to read and interpret maps, schedules and various other materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
· Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks.
· Ability to offer assistance to fellow employees as necessary.
· Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
· Ability to perform duties in a courteous manner and with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public.
· Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.

Work occurs primarily in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold. Employee is subject to the noise which may require the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration such as oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body when working with equipment. Employee is subject to hazards including exposure to moving or parked vehicles, mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts, and oils.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by three to six months of experience as a passenger van / bus driver, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina CDL driver’s license with appropriate endorsements.
