Nature of Work

The Transportation Financial Associate will report to the Budget and Revenue Division of the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Kanawha County. The selected employee performs entry level accounting support duties under close supervision. The incumbent is responsible for performing routine posting and adjusting to the general ledger, processing claims and invoices, and reviewing transactions for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Performs related work as required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learns to process claims and invoices, accurately calculate, and record amounts
  • Learns to prepare bank deposits and/or checks
  • Learns routine posting and adjusting to the ledger
  • Learns to identify and correct own routine posting errors
  • Learns to classify/code according to a chart of accounts
  • Learns to perform routine batch reports
  • Learns to maintain accounting records and gather data from records maintained
  • Learns to contact associates, administrators, and the general public to obtain information or discuss changes in documents
  • Learns duties that require only routine and specific operations that involve a few separate tasks or procedures
  • Learns to provide financial support, work in general accounting, and payroll
    Learns to review and analyze federal and state regulations and local provisions regarding salary and benefit issues
  • Learns to provide information and instruction regarding procedures and methods involved in processing payroll; interprets and explains rules and regulations involving payroll
  • Learns to analyze and maintain annual and sick leave balances
  • Learns to reconcile, prepare, and distribute all W-2 information, as well as any W-2 corrections as needed, in conjunction with the WV State Auditor's Office
  • Learns to approve, track, enter, and request information regarding employee benefits management
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of basic mathematical computations
  • Knowledge of the basic operation of office equipment such as a copier, fax machine, and personal computer
  • Ability to follow basic step by step instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in accounting, bookkeeping, budget, or business experience.
  • Substitution: Successful completion of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience through an established formula.
