JOB TITLE: Transportation Coordinator

 

REPORTS TO:  High School Principal

 

JOB OR POSITION SUMMARY: 

The transportation coordinator is responsible for directing the daily operations of the transportation depart to ensure safe and efficient pupil transportation, vehicle maintenance, routing, scheduling and fiscal responsibilities in support of the school district’s instructional and activity programs for students.  This position requires strong proven abilities in organization, leadership and human relationships.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees all aspects of the daily bus operations.  
  • Provides leadership to the local transportation department on day-to-day operations.  Monitors daily operations to assure that work is performed efficiently and in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Collaboratively establishes and maintains open lines of communication with the building principal, bus mechanic, bus drivers, staff, parents and students.
  • Works collaboratively with the district-wide bus mechanic to ensure constant bus maintenance.
  • Oversees the establishment and updating of bus routes.  Communicates to the building principal necessary changes or updates to bus routes. 
  • Completes and accurately compiles monthly payroll bus driver logs and all necessary reports.
  • Coordinates and provides input in the district transportation services, routing and scheduling efforts and collaborates with appropriate staff regarding preparation of trip sheets for trips/activities through Trip Tracker.
  • Coordinates with the district-wide bus mechanic to prepare for annual state bus inspections.
  • Coordinates bus evacuation drills.
  • Checks road and weather conditions and communicates findings regarding adverse conditions with building principal.
  • Complies with all district policies and promotes the district’s mission and vision statements. 
  • Performs purchasing duties as needed for the transportation department.
  • Ensures that bus drivers are current on annual 6 hour training, DOT physicals and CDL requirements.
  • Ensures that non bus driving staff who request vehicles for trips are eligible to drive those vehicles.  
  • Ensures that staff who drive students are both eligible to drive district vehicles and current on Safe Transit training.
  • Promotes and adheres to a safe work environment.
  • Provides necessary and ongoing training to include safe bus operations, safety at the work place, sharing new information and/or rules, laws and regulations regarding bus operations. 
  • Completes annual evaluations of bus drivers.
  • Will fill in for routes/activities in a situation when a regular, sub or activity driver is not available. 
  • Completion of reasonable suspicion training regarding bus driver impairment assessment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises all route, activity and substitute bus drivers.

 

REQUIRED/PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Five years bus driving experience preferred.
  • Previous successful supervisory experience preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid State of Wyoming Commercial Driver License with School Bus, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements
  • Successful FBI fingerprint background check
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Must be insurable with an acceptable, clean driving record

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

  • Knowledge of safety standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to pupil transportation.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pupil transportation planning, scheduling and route development.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of vehicle maintenance and related safety and legal standards.
  • Knowledge of the integration of special needs students into a school setting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision of staff.
  • Knowledge of the effective and equitable methods of staff evaluation.
  • Skills and ability in organization, time management, task prioritization and recordkeeping.
  • Skills demonstrating high level of integrity, commitment and work ethic. 
  • Ability to perform all responsibilities required of route, activity and sub bus drivers.
  • Ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs, including monitoring work schedules and work performance.
  • Ability to operate all school district busses and vehicles.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to staff and promote a team environment.
  • Ability to facilitate and promote conflict resolution.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting.
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with students, parents, staff and administrators.
  • Ability to use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.

 

    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general transportation bulletins, pamphlets, e-mails and governmental regulations. 
    • Ability to disseminate new regulations and information as necessary.  
    • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.

 

  • Ability to effectively and professionally present information and respond to questions from the school board,  district superintendent, supervising principal, district wide bus mechanic, bus drivers, staff members and the general public.

 

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

This position may require seldom to occasional travel (<2% of regular annual hours) within the State of Wyoming for trainings.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  This job requires the ability to handle and balance multiple demands at the same time.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Generally this job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking and 20% standing. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. The employee must frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision, as well as passing vision testing for CDL. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.   The employee may be required to work in an environment with exposure to petroleum fumes, oil and hazardous materials.  Employee may occasionally work outside. May be required to work flexible hours, including early morning and late evenings.  The noise level in this environment can be from moderate to quite loud depending upon the activity and the particular part of the day.
