Transportation Construction Inspector

As a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), you will play a key role in supporting vital construction projects that impact travelers every day.  You will work directly on active construction sites and help ensure that each project adheres to all standards and expectations.  This role is well suited for someone who enjoys active, detail-oriented assignments.  Apply today and take pride in knowing your dedicated efforts support safe and dependable roadways throughout District 6!

This role focuses on inspecting construction activities and materials to ensure that highway projects follow approved plans and standards.  You will support field checks, documentation, and communication throughout multiple phases of construction.  As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

• Construction Inspection: Inspect all phases of roadway and structure construction to verify conformance with codes, plans, and specifications
• Material Oversight: Check the placement and quality of concrete, bituminous materials, drainage items, and other construction components
• Compaction Testing: Provide visual compaction testing of soils, aggregates, and subsurface layers
• Project Documentation: Record diary entries, calculations, sketches, and quantity estimates using manual or electronic methods
• Progress Monitoring: Prepare reports, review results, and track quantities and schedules throughout the project
• Field Coordination: Communicate with staff, agencies, and contractors while assisting in resolving field issues

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job titles or equivalent Federal Government job titles, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

• This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
