The Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector 2 (TBSAIN2) will report to the Operations Division in Kanawha County. This position is the primary assistant to the Bridge Safety Inspection Crew and the Bridge Safety Inspector 3 or (TBSAIN3) or Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector (TBSAIN4). This is a mid-level position intended to advance through technical classes and hands on training to reach higher levels of bridge inspection responsibility. The selected employee in this position also develops methods and techniques in the details of a thorough and complete inspection. Additionally, the incumbent prepares for and will take an 8 hour West Virginia State Certification examination that consists of written and hands-on components. This test must be successfully passed with a score of 70% or better to advance in the bridge safety inspector classification series. The selected employee must have successfully completed the Comprehensive 2-week NHI course for In-Section Bridge Inspection. This position assists in field inspection and in preparing reports. Performs related work as required.
• Rigs scaffolds and ladders to provide access to bridge structure.
• Chips dirt and scale from bridge members to allow inspection and measurement.
• Obtains data on the dimensions and other details of the bridge.
• Takes soundings to determine scour and other riverbed conditions.
• Takes field notes and makes routine sketches of bridge conditions.
• Takes photographs of bridge deterioration.
• Completes standard bridge inventory documents.
• Makes recommendations for the repair of damage to the bridge.
• Writes inspection reports as required.
• Adheres to specific rules, regulations, and procedures that typically involve a complete segment of an assignment or project of broader scope.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• Knowledge of the manuals and standards of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials and the American Institute of Steel Construction applicable to bridge safety inspection.
• Knowledge of federal and state manuals and standards applicable to bridge safety inspection.
• Knowledge of bridge design types.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications.

• Ability to keep accurate notes and records.

REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW HIRES (ONLY) :
Option 1 Traditional: Documented (2) two years of Board approved technical experience and obtained 180 TDH’s from the AAS Highway Engineering Technology – Bridge Inspection Concentration degree requirements.
OR
Option 2 Pre-Approved BS or AS degree: Obtained a Board approved bachelor’s degree or associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, or similar technical degree from an accredited college or university.
OR
Option 3 Existing Bridge Safety Inspector 1: Obtain 90 TDH’s per year from the AAS Highway Engineering – Bridge Inspection Concentration degree requirements until 2 years of documented Board approved technical experience as a bridge inspector has been met.
