Overview

Consider joining Metal Exchange in our St. Louis, MO office as a Supply Chain Analyst.  The Supply Chain Analyst plays a critical operational and risk-support role within the Recycled Materials Business Unit. With a primary focus on the recycled materials market, this position is responsible for the real-time coordination of Metal Exchange’s (ME) physical and financial position changes that are driven by trader activities. The Analyst ensures accurate, timely, and compliant exposure management, enabling the Business Unit Manager (BUM), Traders, and Risk Management team to concentrate on strategic trading while effectively mitigating financial risk.

 

This role is essential for upholding financial discipline, risk control, and operational efficiency in the Aluminum Business Unit by bridging trader activities with precise position tracking, timely hedging, and effective risk management support.

 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Role:

 

Upon receiving notification of purchases, sales, and final pricing requests, the Analyst performs the following:

  • Maintains accurate financial risk positions, analyzes hedging needs, and executes hedge requests for internal and external risk management team.
  • Performs daily reconciliations, forecasts monthly hedging requirements.
  • Communicates proactively with stakeholders and provides settlement support.

Contract Reconciliation

  • Tracks initial allocation of purchase and sale obligations to confirm compliance with contractual agreements and customer commitments.
  • Collaborates with ASR/Settlement Specialist, Traders, and BU Managers to reconcile actual fulfillment events against established plans.

Financial Position Analysis

  • Analyzes daily financial position data to assess the impact of commercial activities across business units.
  • Identifies and reports issues to management; assists with mitigation efforts as directed.
  • Ensures high data quality for contract and hedge entries.

Key daily activities include:

  • Reconciles financial position reports against trading activity.
  • Performs BU-level financial position analysis.
  • Closes contracts and contract lines for both sales and purchases.
  • Documents and processes transaction details (e.g., total weight, material type, customer/supplier, backside pricing, shipping timeframe, pricing terms).
  • Processes trader communications, position updates, and hedge executions/requests in a timely and accurate manner.

Hedge Administration

  • Supports business risk mitigation by monitoring commercial activity, identifies hedging needs in real time, and documents mitigation actions in the system of record.
  • Associates hedges to underlying contracts.
  • Conducts real-time physical position analysis to determine hedging requirements.
  • Prepares and ensures accuracy of hedge contract details.

Daily & Monthly Routine Tasks

  • Performs morning financial position reconciliation using Risk team snapshot reports; compares against reconciling spreadsheets, applies adjustments, and distributes summaries to BUM and Traders.
  • Monitors physical position changes through Trading System queries and internal reports; updates off-book spreadsheets.
  • Conducts analysis of Open Formula Priced Contracts on forwarding month and submits hedge requests to the Risk Management Team.
  • Delivers clear summaries of position changes, hedge requests, pricing finalizations, and executed risk management actions.
  • Supports stakeholders by providing updated financial and physical position data to inform trade prioritization, price sheet adjustments, hedging decisions, and operational planning.

Settlement Support

  • Works closely with writing traders on trade disputes/claims and provides settlement memo on settled claims.
  • Collects and tracks claims data.
  • Compiles claim data and creates quarterly and year end claim summary.

 

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in Supply Chain Management, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field).

Experience

  • 2–5 years of relevant business experience (e.g., in supply chain, commodities trading, risk management, financial analysis, or recycled materials/metal markets preferred).

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with a focus on meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and intellectual curiosity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective stakeholder collaboration.
  • Effective negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, reconciliation processes, and tools such as Excel (advanced functions, pivots, etc.); familiarity with trading/risk systems is a plus.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and a drug screen.
  • Must be authorized to work, visa sponsorships are not available.
