DescriptionThe Raw Steel Materials Coordinator plans, schedules, and controls the flow of raw steel materials to support fabrication operations, ensuring required plate, sheet, structural shapes, and other materials are available to meet production schedules while optimizing inventory levels, minimizing scrap, and supporting on time customer delivery.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 691 Allandale Road, Victoria, BC.
What you’ll do
Materials Planning & Production Support
- Coordinate steel raw material requirements based on fabrication schedules, work orders, and forecasts.
- Communicate material shortages or constraints to production planning and shop supervisors.
- Prioritize material allocation for urgent or high-value fabrication projects.
Inventory Control & Optimization
- Maintain accurate inventory records for raw steel materials and remnants (drops).
- Monitor heat numbers and material traceability documentation as required.
- Coordinate cycle counts and support physical inventory audits.
- Analyze inventory turns, aging materials, and excess stock.
Supplier & Mill Coordination
- Coordinate with steel mills, service centers, and distributors on pricing, lead times, and deliveries as required
- Expedite critical materials for time-sensitive fabrication jobs.
- Resolve issues related to damaged, nonconforming, or incorrect material deliveries.
Receiving, Documentation, & Compliance
- Ensure proper receipt and inspection of incoming steel materials.
- Verify packing slips, mill test reports (MTRs), certificates of compliance, and heat traceability documentation.
- Coordinate with Quality and Engineering to release materials for production.
- Maintain documentation for customer and regulatory compliance requirements.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Track key metrics such as material availability, scrap rate, inventory accuracy, and on-time delivery impact.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through better purchasing strategies and remnant utilization.
- Participate in Lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives.
What You’ll Bring
- 2–4 years of experience in materials coordination, steel purchasing, or a fabrication/manufacturing environment; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, or related field preferred.
- Strong background in structural steel or heavy fabrication, including knowledge of steel grades, shapes, plate thicknesses, and fabrication processes.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Excel; experience with nesting software and material yield optimization is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple fabrication projects, supporting materials management, inventory accuracy and traceability, supplier coordination, and cost control.
- Detail oriented, analytical, and well organized, with the ability to prioritize in a fast paced shop environment.
- Clear communicator able to collaborate across office and shop floor teams; comfortable serving as a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) and providing project updates to stakeholders.
- Willingness to work in both office and fabrication shop settings, comply with all safety and PPE requirements, and perform occasional lifting up to 40 lbs.

The estimated salary for this position is $84,600 - $103,400. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
