Operations Superintendent - "Day Foreman"

SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Galveston Bay Refinery is seeking an Operations Superintendent. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of assigned process units by overseeing area team personnel. The Operations Superintendent directly supervises the Shift Supervisor – Refining and drives Operating Excellence by fostering a culture of ownership, setting clear expectations, and ensuring accountability within the team. Key responsibilities include executing the production plan while maintaining safety, compliance, reliability, and profitability. This position reports to the Area Team Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures employees across all shift crews execute safe and efficient operation of assigned process units or tank farms.
  • Establish and maintain culture of safety and environmental excellence by modeling appropriate behaviors and ensuring compliance with all safety and operating policies and best practices. Looks for opportunities to improve the safety and environmental performance of the area.
  • Supervise and communicate day-to-day operations and work activities within assigned areas to optimize production and ensure all product quality standards are met. Identifies potential risk and opportunities proactively. Supports troubleshooting and optimization that is beyond shift crew capabilities.
  • Manage unit performance and equipment availability and communicates to ensure safe, efficient, and effective implementation of production plan. 
  • Drive compliance with process safety management (PSM) requirements, including, but not limited to, Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs), Management of Change (MOC), and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs), ensuring good practices are followed and have adequate Operations participation.
  • Achieve unit reliability and production goals through support and coordination of maintenance, capital projects and turnaround activities.
  • Support culture of high performance and continuous improvement through training, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Recommend and/or provide input into development of methods and procedures to improve Operational Excellence by driving Operational Discipline and a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
  • Understands this job is in production-centered support of a 24/7 operation and may require additional time and resources.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Six (6) years or more relevant experience or four (4) years or more relevant experience with an Engineering Degree.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field/Console Operator or process engineering experience preferred.
  • Leadership experience preferred.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote) and the ability to leverage these tools for effective communication and coordination. 
  • Strong coordination skills, demonstrated through successful interdisciplinary project management.
  • Leadership abilities to conduct and facilitate meetings with various stakeholders. 
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both frontline workers and leadership.
  • Experience and/or comfort with presenting training material in both hands on and classroom settings
