We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a driven and self-motivated professional to join Mainroad Alberta Contracting (Vermilion) LP as our Superintendent. In this key leadership role, you will oversee day-to-day operations, provide clear guidance to field teams, and ensure the effective delivery of our highway maintenance contract. This is a full-time salaried position based in Camrose or Vermilion, Alberta, reporting directly to the Contracts Manager.
We are seeking a proactive, hands-on leader with a proven background in highway maintenance, complemented by strong management, interpersonal, and technical competencies.
Mainroad Alberta Contracting (Vermilion) LP was awarded two provincial highway maintenance contracts (CMA 512 and CMA 513), covering approximately 2,160 kilometres of highway and 59 bridges. Operations will be supported through yard locations in Blackfoot, Edgerton, Dewberry, Wainwright, Vermilion, Viking, Killam, and Camrose.

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in highway maintenance, heavy civil construction, or a related industry
- Degree or diploma in Engineering, Business Administration, or Construction Management, or an equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience
- Proven management experience, including the ability to interpret and apply applicable legislation such as Employment Standards
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead by example, build strong teams, and foster a collaborative work environment
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and ensure compliance with contract documents and contractual requirements
- Solid understanding of highway maintenance and construction processes, including operational cycles, workflows, safety requirements such as OH&S legislation, and quality standards such as ISO
- Project management expertise to plan, oversee, and deliver multiple concurrent highway maintenance, bridge, and pavement marking contracts and projects
- Demonstrated experience in financial oversight, budgeting, and cost control within a complex operational environment, including the ability to interpret financial reports
- Ability to plan, implement, and manage budgets while achieving operational and financial targets
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Experience leading continual improvement initiatives and implementing industry best practices
- Ability to develop innovative, strategic solutions that enhance operational efficiency, safety, and performance
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to effectively engage internal teams, clients, subcontractors, senior leadership, and other stakeholders
- Mentoring and coaching capabilities to support employee development and performance
- High level of attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as relevant operational systems such as GPS or AVLS platforms and ERP software
Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provide strong leadership and direction to foremen, mechanics, and operational staff to meet the performance requirements of the highway maintenance contract and external work.
- Manage day-to-day operations, ensuring highway, bridge, and pavement marking activities meet Contract Specifications, KPIs, safety standards, and timelines.
- Oversee work planning, resource allocation, and the execution of seasonal operational plans, including the Snow and Ice Control Plan.
- Lead post-storm and end-of-season reviews.
- Coordinate and manage major subcontractors, suppliers, and material purchasing, including monitoring subcontractor performance and approving agreements.
- Liaise with the fleet team to ensure equipment is properly maintained and winter-ready; review annual capital acquisition plans for fleet and equipment upgrades.
- Monitor work reporting, crew sheets, PMA uploads, material usage, and compliance documentation to ensure accuracy and accountability.
- Conduct QA audits, respond to non-compliance reports, and implement corrective actions to support continual improvement.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture aligned with OH&S legislation, ISO standards, environmental requirements, and internal protocols.
- Oversee traffic accommodation strategies, detours, and road closures, coordinating with RCMP, municipalities, TEC, and other partners.
- Lead client, government, Indigenous, and community stakeholder engagement, representing the company in meetings, site visits, and industry forums.
- Support workforce planning, including recruitment, training, retention, and succession planning.
- Monitor staffing levels and adjust resources to meet operational and seasonal demands.
- Implement and monitor annual budgets, monthly forecasts, and project financials, ensuring cost-effective operations and timely reporting to senior leadership.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, insurance, and contractor obligations.
- Monitor the maintenance of all facilities, owned and leased properties, and heavy equipment.
- Maintain strong internal and external communication, supporting issue resolution and operational updates with TEC, municipalities, and other stakeholders.
