This position has an initial appointment of 2 years.

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

The Diane and Irving Kipnes Health Research Institute was founded in 2025 based on a $25M gift. The institute’s vision is to unite researchers, clinicians, learners, policymakers and communities to create a learning health system where artificial intelligence enhances care, clinical trials validate breakthroughs, and specialized programs demonstrate the full cycle of research from insight to impact — continuously improving outcomes for all Albertans.

Reporting to the Institute Director, the Manager, Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for the institute, works collaboratively with the institute’s academic leadership on the development of the institute’s strategic plan, program evaluations, communication strategy, and research impact assessments; and is responsible for program development and implementation.



Responsibilities
  • Assists in the development of a strategy for the institute to meet its vision in collaboration with institute leadership; creates functional plans with short-term and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Ensure alignment of the institute with the University's strategic plans (e.g. SHAPE, Braiding the Past, Present Future).
  • Oversees the implementation of action plans based on strategic objectives; assigns the right resources to achieve concrete results; responds to organizational priorities.
  • Implements, contributes to, and participates in institute governance and advisory structures to enable ongoing institutional oversight and strategic advancement.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of the institute’s research funding and support programs, research platforms, and stewardship strategies.
  • Develops and leads the implementation of communications and marketing strategies to increase visibility, reputation, and engagement.
  • Oversees the evaluation, development and, where necessary, transformation of business processes across the institute to ensure operational efficiencies, including the development of policy, process, procedure and/or tools to support achievement.
  • Determines resources (fiscal and human) required to advance the institute’s functional area strategies; allocates resources as required.
  • Makes decisions, in consultation with the Institute Director and Institute leadership, on the acquisition of resources and manages issues related to facility and space allocation.


Qualifications
  • Graduate degree (health sciences preferred).
  • More than 10 years of progressively senior leadership experience in health research, post-secondary, or related sectors.
  • Working knowledge of the U of A administrative structure, policies, procedures, and issues.
  • Proven track record in leading and implementing strategic plans in the health research, post-secondary or related sector.
  • Experience supporting project/program planning and implementation required.
  • Previous experiences in marketing and communications are strong assets, with emphasis on knowledge translation for the general public and fund development.
  • Experience in financial reporting, budget management, and fiscal planning is required; experience in research and trust accounting is an asset.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $80,772 to $111,086.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
