The Syracuse Combined Cycle Plant in Solvay, NY, is a 103 MW facility with a Siemens V64.3 combustion turbine, a Deltak three-drum HRSG, and an Ansaldo steam turbine. This role may also support the Beaver Falls Generating Facility, a 107 MW 1x1 combined-cycle dual-fuel cogeneration plant supplying steam to two paper mills. Beaver Falls features a Siemens V64.3 turbine, an Ansaldo steam turbine, a Deltak HRSG, and a Tempella auxiliary boiler. Both plants play a key role in the regional energy landscape, ensuring reliable power and supporting New York’s industrial operations.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician at the Syracuse Combined Cycle Plant in Solvay, NY plays a vital role in the startup, shutdown, and routine operation of combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), and critical auxiliary systems. Responsibilities include conducting equipment inspections, performing minor repairs, monitoring system parameters, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and operational protocols. The technician also maintains accurate documentation in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and supports maintenance activities to promote reliable and efficient plant performance. This position may also provide support to the Beaver Falls Generating Facility as needed.

Your scope of responsibility as O&M Technician will include the following primary functions:

  • Perform routine startup, shutdown, and normal operation of combined cycle plant systems, including the Siemens V64.3 combustion turbine, Deltak HRSG, Ansaldo steam turbine, and associated balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Operate auxiliary systems such as air compressors, lubrication systems, cooling water equipment, fuel handling systems, and water treatment equipment including RO and demineralized water systems.
  • Conduct regular equipment rounds, operational checks, and minor adjustments to verify proper system performance and identify developing issues.
  • Assist with preparing equipment for service or maintenance by performing lockout and tagout steps, isolations, basic disassembly, cleaning, and inspection tasks under direction.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs that record system parameters, equipment conditions, and any abnormalities encountered during the shift.
  • Recognize abnormal or unsafe operating conditions and promptly report them to the Control Room Operator or supervisor. Take basic corrective actions within established procedures.
  • Support maintenance activities by assisting with inspections, lubrication tasks, gasket or filter replacements, component adjustments, and other hands-on mechanical work appropriate to a mid-level skill set.
  • Enter work requests into the CMMS, document equipment deficiencies, and record maintenance activities and parts used to support accurate tracking of plant maintenance.
  • Complete assigned preventive maintenance tasks and basic corrective work with accuracy, attention to detail, and adherence to plant safety and operating procedures.
  • Monitor and record operating parameters such as temperature, vibration, pressures, flows, and fluid levels using installed instruments, handheld tools, or digital monitoring systems.
  • Perform visual inspections and listen to equipment during rounds to detect leaks, unusual noises, excessive vibration, or other early signs of mechanical issues, and escalate findings appropriately.
  • Assist in troubleshooting mechanical equipment by identifying symptoms and supporting more advanced technicians or supervisors in problem resolution.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by the Plant Manager or senior operations staff to support reliable and safe operation of the facility.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports directly to the Plant Manager. Additionally, this position will coordinate with all other plant personnel to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The O&M Technician works a standard Monday to Friday schedule during regular day shift hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.

Periodic travel to the Beaver Falls Generating Facility in Beaver Falls, NY, as needed.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $39 to $44 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.

Core Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for a skilled Technician with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards.

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school. An Associate degree in power plant technology, a related technical field, or engineering is preferred. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Proven track record in technician roles within power generation, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and combined cycle gas turbine systems.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and operational systems, including support for equipment startup, shutdown, and routine plant operations.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, with the ability to assist in troubleshooting, maintenance, and component replacement (e.g., pumps, valves, turbine-generators).
  • Working knowledge of gas and steam turbine principles, CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems), electrical systems, process control systems, and interpretation of P&IDs and plant drawings.
  • Ability to read and understand basic technical documentation, such as blueprints, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams; capable of assisting in the documentation of maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, OSHA standards, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate with peers, supervisors, contractors, and vendors.
  • Developing problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to apply math and technical concepts to support plant operations and reliability.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
