Description Under general supervision of the Section Manager, is responsible for the direction, supervision, and assignment of work to crews under his/her direction for all gas distribution activities in an assigned division of the company.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilities
Ensures that direct reports' work activities are performed in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with established policies and procedures and governmental regulations.
Maintains a working knowledge of relevant state and federal codes, along with Orange and Rockland's gas standards, work procedures, and EH&S rules and guidelines.
Coordinates, monitors and supervises field activities associated with the inspection and maintenance of the Gas Distribution System.
Supervises and dispatches employees in the investigation, surveillance and repair of gas leaks and mandated inspections of gas mains, services and buildings.
Responds to field emergencies of various types.
Plans, organizes, schedules and assures the assignment of personnel to optimize productivity and meet operating goals and system conditions. Verifies and approves time sheets and material requests relating to assigned work.
Sets the expectation and motivates direct reports to perform assigned work in an acceptable and professional manner. This includes taking the proper actions when the assigned work is below and above acceptable levels in accordance with the labor relations guidelines.
Communicates with direct reports and advises on work rule compliance, good housekeeping and work area protection practices for equipment and work areas.
Ensures completion of and quality of pertinent documentation. Performs special projects or assignments as deemed necessary.
Promotes a customer service focus. Emphasizes professionalism, honesty, concern, courtesy, excellence and teamwork within the unit.
Communicates openly with direct reports, fellow supervisors and planner on matters of general interest, Company or department policy, and activities relating to assigned area of responsibility.
This position acts as "Duty Supervisor" on a rotating basis, and incumbents must be available to respond to emergencies when called.
Monitors compliance with Company policies and procedures e.g., Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Substance Abuse, Discipline, Security, Productivity and Environmental Instructions, Code of Conduct, etc. Performs other related tasks and assignments as required.
Qualifications Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years related work experience in the operation and maintenance of a gas distribution,
steam or electric system or
Associate's Degree and 4+ years related work experience in the operation and maintenance of a gas distribution,
steam or electric system. or
High School Diploma/GED 5+ years related work experience in the operation and maintenance of a gas distribution system.
Relevant Work Experience
Must fulfill the requirements of the Operator Qualification for the assigned area of supervision within 1 year of accepting the position. Required
Must have demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office and Mainframe & Web based systems and the ability to coordinate with other departments. Required
Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to foster a team spirited work environment in support of Orange & Rockland's and Con Edison's Corporate Values. Required
Must be able to balance priorities, handle multiple assignments with changing priorities and take decisive action. Required
Must have excellent communication skills, demonstrating a clear and logical style that is easy to understand. Required
The ability to work with all levels of management and union personnel is essential. Must be able to effectively lead and manage work crews. Required

Additional Physical Demands
The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must be available to be on call and/or participate in off-hour emergency response activities as required.
The position requires working in all types of weather conditions when in the field, as well as climbing and working in areas of limited space.
Must be medically approved and fit tested for half-face, full face and SCBA use.
This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation.
