DescriptionThe Manager, State Tax Operations supports Fortive’s U.S. tax operations team with a primary focus on state income tax compliance and reporting, audits, and planning, while working to continuously improve processes, data quality, and scalability through technology.
This role operates in a dynamic, acquisitive, and technology-enabled environment and the ideal candidate brings strong technical capability, a continuous-improvement mindset, and the ability to translate complexity into practical execution. This position reports to the Director, Federal and State Tax Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the preparation and review of state and local income, franchise, and gross receipts tax returns including the preparation of apportionment and state modification calculations.
- Support the state income tax provision processes, including current and deferred taxes and related disclosures.
- Prepare state income and franchise tax estimated payments and extensions.
- Support state tax audits and inquiries, including data collection, drafting responses, and coordinating resolutions with tax authorities.
- Evaluate the state tax implications of business initiatives, restructurings, and transactions, translating technical considerations into actionable guidance.
- Partner with operating companies on indirect tax matters, including sales and use tax, property tax, and business licenses.
- Continuously evaluate and improve compliance processes, data flows, and internal controls to support a growing and evolving business.
- Embed automation, standardization, and continuous improvement into day-to-day tax operations.
- Develop and maintain standard work, process documentation, and knowledge sharing to support scalability, audit readiness, and team effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Master’s in Taxation and/or CPA preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in corporate and/or public accounting with a focus on state income tax.
- Strong understanding of U.S. state income, franchise, and indirect tax principles.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Experience with Corptax, Alteryx, Power Platform, agentic AI, or similar automation tools.
- Results-oriented, intellectually curious, collaborative, and improvement-focused mindset.
