About the team and the role:
The team at eBay is responsible for the science algorithms powering Retrieval & Relevance across all surfaces on site: Search, Home Page, Recommendations, CRM, post checkout etc. and drives a large part of eBay’s core marketplace business.
We are seeking a Group Product Manager who is passionate about Relevance, online commerce, AI/ML, generative AI, LLMs, and buyer experience. This role will join the Science product team and lead efforts related to interpreting user queries and Retrieval. The focus is on delivering relevance throughout all buyer touchpoints on site, end-to-end. Amongst other things, this person will be responsible for using generative AI technology, working across core Query, Context and Intent Understanding building features that drive Retrieval and Relevance to ensure the success of our buyers.
As the Group Product Manager responsible for end-to-end Relevance, you will define and execute the strategic vision for eBay Search’s Query Understanding capabilities, classification systems, product intent detection using a Multi dimensional ontology, faceting, trigger mechanism as well as query rewrites, query suggestions, spell corrections etc. This role blends deep technical skill in ML/NLU systems with strong partner and strategic leadership skills.
What you will accomplish:
You will define and drive the strategy for relevance across every Buyer Surface, including Search, Home Page, Recommendations, CRM, post checkout, Organic and Sponsored listings.
You will be crafting the evolution of the Buyer experience with high relevance and optimization.
Partner with Applied Researchers and Engineering to build and scale embedding-based classifiers, query understanding pipelines, triggering mechanisms and retrieval frameworks, including vector based retrieval (text & multi-modal) and hybrid search.
Use metrics, experimentation, and user research to find opportunities, validate impact, and continuously improve.
Define KPIs for search quality, including relevance, recall, and precision, and ensure measurable improvements through A/B tests.
Build foundational systems for query understanding, triggering, slotting, and ranking that empower relevance for vertical product teams.
What you will bring:
10+ years of product management experience with a strong focus on systems powered by machine learning, search technologies, or natural language understanding.
Proven expertise in ML classifiers, embeddings, LLMs, and related AI technologies.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with a data-informed decision-making approach.
Track record of cross-functional leadership, driving alignment across engineering, science, product, and business teams.
Represent the product area to senior executives and cross-functional leaders, providing updates on roadmap progress, competitive landscape, and innovation opportunities.
Evangelize the role of Retrieval & Relevance in enabling elite search, recommendations & discovery experiences across the company’s ecosystem.
