Description

 The Director of Operations oversees all aspects of the Business Unit’s mechanical contracting operations, ensuring the efficient delivery of HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial construction projects. This key leadership role supports an enterprise-wide mindset and drives platform initiatives. Responsibilities include setting operational strategies aligned with business goals, managing resources, and ensuring projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards. Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Operations develops and executes strategies that promote operational excellence, growth, and profitability. While core responsibilities are outlined below, additional duties may be assigned to meet evolving business needs. 

Requirements

Operational Leadership & Strategy:

· Work closely with President in the development of annual business unit budgets and operating plans and strategic roadmap and inspire organization with key strategic initiatives, direction and growth objectives.

· Provide strategic leadership to ensure the operations team delivers all projects within established budgetary targets, reinforcing financial discipline and long-term organizational performance.

· Drive change and communicate a clear, inspiring, compelling operational vision aligned with enterprise-wide and business unit strategies.

· Provide leadership across all operational functions, including project management, field operations, and procurement.

· Develop and execute strategies aligned with the company’s goals and growth priorities.

· Enhance operational performance by improving processes, reducing costs, and increasing profitability.

· Set clear strategic direction for project delivery to ensure superior quality, safety, and client satisfaction

Team Development & Management:

· Provide strategic leadership and development for key operational leaders, including project managers, field supervisors, and support teams to strengthen organizational capability and alignment.

· Cultivate a high-performance culture grounded in cross-department collaboration, accountability, and shared operational goals.

· Lead strategic talent management by assessing performance, identifying high-potential employees, and shaping development programs that build long-term operational excellence.

· Ensure organizational readiness by fostering the use of company policies, processes, procedures, and industry best practices into business unit level training and development.

Project Oversight & Execution:

· Direct and manage the execution of commercial HVAC and plumbing projects from mobilization through closeout.

· Ensure all projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with contractual requirements.

· Coordinate with business development, estimating, preconstruction and project management teams to support seamless transitions, timely prefabrication, material delivery, and adherence to project schedules.

· Identify and address project risks, delays, and issues, implementing effective solutions to maintain project performance.

Financial Management and Reporting:

· Oversee project financials, including budgets, change orders, and cost-control activities.

· Assess project performance and any gross margin fade and seek immediate course-correction and recovery.

· Deliver regular financial updates to the President and key stakeholders, highlighting project progress and operational performance.

· Implement cost-control strategies and identify opportunities to enhance project profitability.

Client & Stakeholder Management:

· Maintain strategic relationships with key clients, general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to support business continuity and sustain long-term partnerships.

· Serve as the principal client liaison for operational performance, project execution, and timely resolution of issues.

· Represent the organization in engagements with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to ensure full compliance and reinforce superior customer experiences.

Safety & Compliance:

· Ensure all projects and operational activities consistently adhere to our company-first culture, applicable safety regulations, recognized industry standards, and contractual requirements.

· Provide strategic, executive-level oversight for the implementation, and enforcement of comprehensive company safety programs and policies in alignment with our company-first culture.

· Maintain active oversight of field operations to verify strict compliance with safety protocols and address safety-related issues with immediacy, rigor, and organizational authority.

Key Performance Indicators:

· Employee engagement scores meet or exceed desired company targets.

· On-time project delivery in alignment with established schedules.

· Completion of projects within budget and achievement of targeted profit margins.

· Strong employee performance, retention, and development across the operations team.

· High levels of client satisfaction and retention, supported by repeat business and positive feedback.

· Adherence to safety standards and continuous reduction of incidents, embracing all company defined Safety Metrics.

Required Skills and Abilities:

· Proven leadership and management skills, with experience overseeing large teams and multiple departments.

· Demonstrated expertise in employee performance management and development.

· Demonstrated expertise in change management and cohesive team building.

· Strong understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems, construction management, and project execution.

· Extensive experience in strategic planning, budgeting of business.

· Extensive experience in financial management of business, and cost control of projects.

· Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve issues quickly and effectively.

· Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with clients, vendors, and internal teams.

· Ability to drive operational excellence and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

· 10+ years of experience in operations management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the mechanical contracting or commercial construction industry.

· Advanced degree in construction management, engineering, business, finance or a related field highly preferred.

· Proven track record of managing large teams and successful project delivery.

· Strong knowledge of budgeting, project management software, and operational efficiency tools.

· PMP or similar project management certification is preferred.
