Job Summary
The Director of Facilities and Transportation provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all district facilities, maintenance, custodial services, capital projects, and student transportation services. This position ensures that school buildings and grounds are safe, compliant, efficient, and supportive of high-quality teaching and learning, while also overseeing reliable, safe, and cost-effective transportation services for students and staff. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and well-maintained learning environments while providing dependable transportation services that support student access and achievement across the district.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervision of all aspects of the facilities staff and district transportation.

Essential Functions
Leadership & Strategic Planning
•Develop and implement long-range facilities and transportation plans aligned with the district’s strategic goals.
•Lead planning, design, and execution of capital improvement projects, renovations, and new construction.
•Advise the Superintendent and School Committee on facilities conditions, capital needs, and transportation operations.
•Establish and monitor departmental goals, performance metrics, and service standards.
Facilities Management
•Oversee maintenance, custodial, grounds, and facility operations across all district properties.
•Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations (e.g., safety, environmental, ADA, fire, and building codes).
•Develop and manage preventative maintenance programs to extend asset life and reduce downtime.
•Supervise facility use scheduling, leasing agreements, and community partnerships related to district properties.
•Implement energy management and sustainability initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Transportation Services
•Direct daily operations of student transportation, including routing, scheduling, fleet maintenance, and driver supervision.
•Ensure compliance with all applicable transportation regulations and safety standards.
•Develop efficient bus routes and transportation systems that prioritize student safety and cost-effectiveness.
•Oversee driver recruitment, training, certification, and performance evaluation.
•Manage vehicle procurement, inspection, and preventative maintenance programs.
Budget & Financial Management
•Develop, administer, and monitor departmental budgets for facilities and transportation.
•Prepare cost estimates and financial projections for capital projects and fleet replacement.
•Identify and pursue cost-saving initiatives and funding opportunities, including grants.
•Oversee vendor selection, contract negotiation, and service agreements.
Safety & Risk Management
•Maintain comprehensive safety programs for facilities and transportation operations.
•Coordinate emergency preparedness planning related to facilities and transportation.
•Ensure timely response to facility emergencies and transportation incidents.
•Oversee risk management practices and insurance coordination.
Personnel Management
•Supervise and evaluate facilities managers, maintenance staff, custodial staff, transportation supervisors, and drivers.
•Promote a culture of accountability, customer service, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
•Coordinate professional development and training programs for department staff.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
•Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing), fleet management, and transportation routing systems.
•Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and safety standards.
•Demonstrated financial and budget management expertise.
•Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
•Ability to analyze data and implement operational improvements.
•Proficiency in facilities management and transportation software systems.
Education and Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
•Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in facilities management, transportation operations, or related field, preferably in a K–12 school district or public sector environment.
•Experience managing capital projects and supervising diverse teams.
Physical Requirements
•Ability to visit school sites and inspect facilities and fleet operations.
•Ability to respond to emergencies outside of regular business hours.
