The Opportunity

The Customs Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring full compliance with Canadian and U.S. customs regulations for cross-border shipments. Additionally, the role will support international operations, providing guidance and cost visibility for import/export activities involving other countries.

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in customs laws, tariff classification, valuation, and origin requirements, and works closely with internal teams, customs brokers, and government agencies while staying current on regulatory changes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, review, and submit shipping documentation in compliance with customs regulations.
  • Analyze import and export documentation to determine applicable tariff classifications and duties.
  • Provide guidance and support for import/export compliance and cost assessment for international shipments.
  • Ensure accurate product classification (HTS/HS codes), country of origin, and other required data for customs clearance.
  • Audit and maintain product classifications to ensure ongoing accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare and submit applicable customs compliance reports.
  • Monitor changes in customs regulations, tariffs, and trade agreements (including USMCA/CUSMA), assess potential impacts, and communicate updates to internal stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance and advisory support to internal teams on customs, tariffs, trade compliance, and duty-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with logistics, supply chain, finance, and other internal teams to resolve customs-related issues.
  • Conduct internal audits to ensure adherence to customs regulations and company policies.
  • Monitor and manage post-entry corrections, amendments, and disclosures as required.
  • Maintain accurate and complete customs records in accordance with applicable laws and internal policies.
  • Assist with duty drawbacks and cost-saving initiatives where applicable.
  • Develop, document, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to customs compliance


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), Licensed Customs Broker (LCB), or equivalent designation preferred
  • 3–5 years of progressive experience in customs documentation, import/export compliance, or trade compliance with Canada–U.S. shipments.
  • Experience working as customs broker would be an asset.
  • Proficient with Incoterms, HTS classification, customs clearance processes, and trade compliance regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of free trade agreements, such as USMCA / CUSMA.
  • Experience preparing reports, audits, and leading or participating in classification projects.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient in MS Office, experience with ERP systems. Familiarity with customs software or trade compliance systems is a plus.
