Who we are:
We’re the Transportation Department, and we make things move—literally. From improving roads and transit to creating safer bike and pedestrian paths, we plan and manage projects that shape how people travel every day. We also work closely with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to keep the county connected and moving forward.

What you will learn:

As an intern, you’ll gain real-world, hands-on experience with transportation projects that matter. 

Your work may include:

  • Managing projects and reviewing roadway plans
  • Joining construction progress meetings and visiting active sites
  • Evaluating commercial and residential site plans
  • Supporting transportation planning studies and traffic impact analyses
  • Preparing state and federal funding applications
  • Using GIS tools to analyze and visualize data
  • Learning about regional collaboration by attending MPO/TPO meetings
  • Contributing to a countywide microtransit study
  • Participating in Road Safety Audits
  • Conducting field reviews of road conditions
  • Perform other work as required.

Internship Requirements and Eligibility

  • To be considered for the Internship Program, students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.8.  Students accepted into the Internship Program must be able to participate in the full 10-week program, exhibit a commitment to public service, and a genuine interest in learning about public administration.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
  • Background in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, and/or Transportation Planning
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, the record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at the time of the interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of the interview date.
  • Work outside the office will be required.

Program Dates

The Summer 2026 program will be held from May 26, 2026, to July 30, 2026.

  • Applications are accepted until February 15, 2026. 
  • Candidates will be notified of selection by April 3, 2026.

Program Pay Rates

Undergraduate-$17.00/hour; Graduate-$19.00/hour
